NJBEST Scholarship: claiming a New Jersey award through a 529 account

A beneficiary of a NJBEST 529 plan may apply for a one-time $2,000–$6,000 award after meeting account-age, contribution, and residency conditions. It applies at eligible New Jersey institutions and has separate fall and spring dates.

The NJBEST Scholarship is a state award for the beneficiary of an NJBEST 529 college-savings account, not an open scholarship for every New Jersey student. The student or account owner must meet plan-age and contribution rules, and the award may be paired with a qualified 529 withdrawal in the study term. Before applying, identify both beneficiary and account owner because conditions may involve each.

HESAA lists a one-time award between $2,000 and $6,000 depending on how long the account has been open and total contributions. Eligibility requires an account at least four years old with at least $1,200 in aggregate contributions; a 529 withdrawal for qualified education expenses must occur in the same semester. The student or contributor must meet the state-residency condition, and the student must attend an eligible New Jersey institution at least half time.

Do not confuse the scholarship with the separate NJBEST Matching Program, an incentive for account contributions. Nor is the award recurring annually: it is paid once, with the official chart setting the level. Because the amount depends on contribution history and account age, request a plan statement and verify covered costs before scheduling a withdrawal subject to tax rules.

The application is filed through NJFAMS after June 1; HESAA lists December 1 for Fall and May 1 for Spring. Complete FAFSA or the applicable alternative filing and keep proof of the withdrawal. If the student has other aid, ask financial aid how the award coordinates. Do not pay anyone to unlock funds: use the state portal and NJBEST administrator.

Do not compare programs by the phrase “free tuition” alone. Ask the college for a written budget separating tuition, mandatory fees, books, transportation, housing, and meals, and ask which other grants are deducted before this award is calculated. A last-dollar scholarship may cover only eligible charges left after Pell and institutional aid.

Keep confirmation for every application and check your student portal: FAFSA/CADAA, residency verification, a transcript, education plan, or data-release consent may still be missing. If the current cycle deadline has passed, ask whether an appeal or late list exists, but prepare for the next cycle without assuming late documents will be accepted. Use the linked profiles to identify the administrator and official channel.

Aid can affect other awards and renewals. Before dropping credits, changing campuses, taking a break, or accepting a loan, ask in writing how your award would be recalculated and what academic progress is required. A published maximum is not an individual offer: the final amount depends on funding, eligible charges, other aid, and your file.

Bottom line

Check account age, contributions, and qualified 529 withdrawal; this is a one-time award, separate from NJBEST matching.
