Next NC combines federal and state aid to make college costs easier to understand for students with financial need. It applies at North Carolina’s public community colleges and UNC System universities. It is not one uniform award: charges and the mix of Pell and state aid vary by institution type and enrollment. Its purpose is to reduce direct costs, not automatically pay housing, transportation, or every cost of attendance.
For 2026–27, CFNC lists two financial screens: household adjusted gross income of $80,000 or less and a FAFSA Student Aid Index of $7,500 or less. Students must also be North Carolina residents, U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens, enrolled in an undergraduate program, and taking at least six credits. Colleges verify these details through FAFSA and admission records.
Students complete FAFSA and list the campus they plan to attend. CFNC identifies June 1 as the priority FAFSA date for the cycle while encouraging earlier filing; colleges may set internal timelines for admission, verification, and registration. If the eligibility tool does not show a match, check that FAFSA lists the correct school and academic year before concluding the student is ineligible.
At community colleges, CFNC describes a $3,000 minimum for eligible students; the package combines Pell and state funds according to enrollment and need. At UNC universities, the award is calculated using campus tuition and fees. The final amount can differ from a headline figure and may change when credits or financial data change. Rely on the official campus notice.
This scholarship does not remove the need to finish the college’s financial-aid process. Respond to verification, provide residency or citizenship documents when requested, and check whether the package includes loans alongside grants. If enrollment falls below six credits or a student changes programs, ask before assuming the award continues; the change may affect the amount and type of aid.
The Check My Eligibility tool offers an initial screen but does not replace a financial-aid offer. Compare Next NC with Pell, other scholarships, mandatory fees, supplies, housing, and food. Ask the campus for a term-by-term net-cost estimate and disbursement date. Students with remaining housing or transportation costs can ask about emergency grants, student employment, and local payment options.
Before applying, confirm the current cycle, priority date, participating institution, enrollment load, and any missing records. Keep a copy of the FAFSA or state form, transcripts, and submission confirmation. Ask about renewal, covered expenses, and coordination with other aid. Do not budget money until you receive an official award.
Compare net cost and distinguish scholarships, grants, waivers, and loans; they are not all repaid or applied to the same charges. Verify current-cycle dates and requirements directly with the administrator.
Read the program profile and federal FAFSA guide; confirm with the administrator how the aid coordinates.
