New York’s STEM Incentive ties tuition aid to a post-graduation residency and employment commitment. It serves students graduating in the top 10% of a New York high-school class who enroll immediately at SUNY or CUNY in an approved STEM program. A science-related title alone is not enough; HESC publishes eligible CIP codes and occupations.

The award covers tuition up to the resident rate at a SUNY state-operated campus or actual tuition if lower, reduced by other tuition awards such as TAP. It does not automatically pay fees, housing, or meals. It may cover up to four undergraduate years, or five for certain approved five-year programs, subject to full-time enrollment and a 2.5 GPA.

After graduation, recipients must live and work in New York for five years in an approved STEM occupation. Moving before completing the commitment may convert all award payments into a ten-year loan with interest. This makes it important to compare the scholarship with options that carry no work obligation, especially for students considering out-of-state careers.

The 2026–27 application listed an August 15, 2026 deadline, which has passed as of this review; do not assume applications remain open or invent next year’s date. Gather class-rank verification and transcripts, file FAFSA, and watch HESC for the next cycle. Check the STEM CIP code and read the service agreement before accepting.

The award applies only to approved STEM study at SUNY or CUNY and requires a student to rank in the top 10% of the high-school graduating class. Apply during senior year and begin college immediately without a gap that breaks the condition. Confirm the major appears on the approved list before choosing it.

The service commitment is central: after graduation, recipients must live and work in New York in an approved STEM occupation for five years. Failure may convert the aid into a loan with interest under program rules. Read the agreement, learn which jobs qualify, and consider whether the major and geographic commitment fit your plans.

The 2026–27 deadline was August 15, 2026 and has passed; do not assume the next date until HESC publishes it. If you applied, check your email and HESC account for documents. Otherwise explore Excelsior, TAP, or other current aid, each with separate rules and no automatic replacement for this award.

Before deciding, request an individual estimate showing aid applied first, remaining tuition, required fees, and outside costs. Confirm residency, credits, renewal, deadlines, and documents against current official guidance, and keep submission receipts.

Read the official program profile and the FAFSA application guide; ask the college for an individual balance review.

Checked October 13, 2026 against official sources. Eligibility, award amounts, funding, and deadlines vary by program and can change by cycle. A grant does not necessarily cover housing, meals, books, or transportation. File FAFSA or the applicable state application, confirm your balance with the financial-aid office, and do not pay third parties to apply.

Bottom line

Compare net cost and excluded charges before committing; the financial-aid office confirms eligibility and the final balance.
