NYS STEM Incentive: SUNY/CUNY tuition, grades, and service commitment

New York’s STEM award covers eligible tuition for top-10% students in approved SUNY/CUNY majors, in exchange for five years living and working in the state.

The NYS STEM Incentive Program turns part of college tuition into a scholarship for students in the top 10% of their class who choose an approved STEM major at SUNY or CUNY. It is not general aid for any major: the official list assigns specific program codes, and the service obligation is central.

Applicants must have been legal New York residents for 12 months, graduate from a New York high school in the top 10%, apply during senior year, and start the following fall. They must take at least 12 credits per term in an approved undergraduate STEM program and maintain a 2.5 cumulative college GPA. HESC can review other evidence if a school does not rank.

The annual award is up to resident undergraduate tuition at a SUNY state-operated campus or actual tuition, whichever is less, reduced by TAP and other tuition-only aid. It does not cover fees, housing, books, or living expenses. It may last two years for an associate degree, four for a bachelor’s, and five for an approved five-year program. Recipients sign a contract to live and work in New York for five years in an approved occupation after graduation.

The 2026–27 deadline was August 15, 2026 and has passed. For the next cycle, prepare the web application, FAFSA, NYS Student Aid Payment Application, transcript, and school top-10% verification; HESC usually opens around October 1, but confirm the new date. Before accepting, review the contract: failure to meet service can convert the award into a state debt.

Before accepting an aid package, compare your individual notice with the bill and ask what happens if you change enrollment, major, or campus. Read the program profile and consult the administering agency; your institution’s financial-aid office confirms your individual determination.

Information checked on October 12, 2026 against official sources. Deadlines for the 2026–27 cycle have passed for several programs; they are identified as past dates where relevant. Eligibility does not guarantee funding: confirm the academic year, your file, and net cost with the program and your campus financial-aid office.

Bottom line

The scholarship can reduce tuition, but its five-year obligation and approved-major list must fit your career plan.
