The Enhanced Tuition Award (ETA) provides up to $6,000 toward tuition at participating private New York colleges, combining TAP, an ETA award, and the institution’s match. For 2026–27, combined federal household income must be $125,000 or less. You must pursue an undergraduate degree at a school on that year’s list; attending any private college in the state is not enough.
You need 12 months of New York residency before the term, citizenship or eligible status, full-time enrollment—at least 12 credits per term—and 30 program credits per year. The amount applies to tuition, not automatically to fees, housing, or books. The 2026–27 new-applicant deadline was August 31, 2026 and has passed; HESC sets dates for each cycle, so an old deadline does not guarantee the next one.
ETA also requires you to live and work in New York for as many years as you receive aid. Failure to meet the service condition may turn the award into a repayment obligation. You must maintain academic eligibility and file FAFSA/TAP or the appropriate DREAM Act application. The institution contributes a match and publishes its certification and cost process.
Compare ETA with Excelsior: Excelsior serves SUNY/CUNY, while ETA covers tuition at HESC-listed private colleges. Both have income limits, credit pace, and residency/work obligations; do not choose based only on “up to $6,000.” Review the 2026–27 participating-college list, ask for your net award letter, and request a written explanation of excluded charges.
To begin, identify the program administrator and the financial-aid office that certifies your enrollment. Review the program profile and requirements; for an individual account, also use the responsible state agency. Before accepting funds, compare the award letter with an itemized campus budget.

Information checked on October 12, 2026 against official sources. Eligibility does not guarantee an award: funding, deadlines, and college requirements can vary. Confirm the cycle, outstanding tasks, and net cost directly with the agency and your institution’s financial-aid office.
