The Legislative Lottery Scholarship provides tuition assistance to certain recent graduates continuing at public or Tribal colleges in New Mexico. It is distinct from the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship: Lottery is designed for the immediate high-school-to-college transition and has a more intensive enrollment path, while Opportunity supports different routes and returning students. Lottery’s amount depends on state funding levels and the institution, so do not treat it as a fixed award without reviewing the campus offer.

State guidance says students must earn a New Mexico high-school diploma or GED, enter an eligible public college as a “first-time freshman” within 16 months, take at least 12 credits per term at a community college or 15 at a four-year university, and earn at least a 2.5 college GPA in the first semester to keep the scholarship. Some rules allow credit-hour checks across the academic year and summer eligibility. Dual-enrollment credits do not automatically disqualify a student.

The campus coordinates eligibility review and disbursement; applicants should identify themselves correctly as first-time freshmen on the admission application and submit FAFSA or the applicable alternative financial-aid form. In October 2026, apply early and confirm the college’s calendar because completing 12 or 15 credits each term affects renewal and full-time status. The scholarship is for tuition, while Pell and other aid may help with housing, meals, and materials.

Before accepting, compare the final balance with tuition, fees, and other aid; confirm the rules with the official source and ask the college financial-aid office for guidance.

Read the official program profile and FAFSA guide; request an individual review before enrolling.
