The Nebraska Opportunity Grant, formerly known as the Nebraska State Grant, is state need-based aid awarded through postsecondary institutions in Nebraska. The commission lists Nebraska residency, attendance at an eligible college, and financial need shown through FAFSA as core criteria; students do not apply directly to the state for a check. Eligibility and award size depend on the financial calculation and funds available to the campus, so one statewide maximum does not apply equally to everyone.

File FAFSA each year and list the Nebraska institutions you are considering. The commission says each college may require an additional form and recommends contacting its financial-aid office; awards are processed at the institution and may require verification of need, enrollment, and progress. Do not confuse NOG with Community College Gap Assistance, which pays for eligible job training, or Nebraska Career Scholarship, which targets high-demand careers under different rules.

To find out whether the college is considering you, check its financial portal and ask whether FAFSA must arrive by a campus priority date. The program page does not publish a guaranteed amount for each student; a family estimate is not the final award. Before accepting loans, request a written breakdown of NOG, Pell, and institutional aid and ask which costs remain. If your income changed since the tax year reflected in FAFSA, ask the college how to report special circumstances or request professional judgment.

Before accepting aid, compare the net balance with tuition, fees, and other costs; confirm requirements and deadlines with the official source and ask the college financial-aid office for guidance.

Read the official program profile and FAFSA guide; request an individual review before enrolling.

Bottom line

Compare net costs and confirm requirements, funding, dates, and obligations with the program and institution before committing.
