Nebraska’s Community College Gap Assistance Program addresses a common gap: people who need short training for an in-demand job, but whose course is not eligible for Pell because it is nondegree or otherwise outside federal rules. Nebraska distributes money to its six community colleges; each campus recruits, reviews, and selects participants in approved programs. Completing FAFSA alone does not produce an automatic statewide award.
State guidance allows aid for tuition, direct training costs, required books and equipment, and related industry-testing or background-check fees. Applicants must meet the family-income limit—up to 250% of the federal poverty guideline—and residency terms in the program rules. Selection also depends on the course, available funds, and the college’s review.
Apply through a participating community college, not a national scholarship portal. Contact the Gap representative in your area and ask which courses currently have funds, whether seats are available before the next start date, and what income or residency documents are accepted. The grant targets direct costs rather than general living expenses; request an estimate separating tuition, tools, transportation, and certification tests before committing.
Before accepting aid, compare net cost and uncovered charges. Confirm residency, program, credits, deadlines, renewal, and service obligations in writing with the responsible financial-aid office.
Read the official program profile and FAFSA guide; request an individual review before enrolling.
