Which Places Explain Nagasaki’s Port History: Dejima or Glover Garden?

From Dejima’s former trading enclave to the homes of Minami-Yamate, two walks explain different stages in Nagasaki’s opening.

Nagasaki’s relationship with the wider world does not belong to one neighbourhood or one period. Dejima began as a controlled enclave for Dutch trade; later, the opening of the port brought new communities and residences to the hills of Minami-Yamate. Visiting both places reveals the shift from regulated exchange to an international nineteenth-century port, with the city’s terrain as a thread: first the historic waterfront and then the hillside above the harbour. Dejima’s exhibition area is open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, with last entry at 8:40 pm. General admission is ¥1,100 and re-entry is not allowed. Visitors walk through courtyards, former warehouses and reconstructed homes, following a story that begins with the artificial island completed in 1636 and the Dutch trading post’s arrival in 1641. Restoration is ongoing, so buildings and rooms represent different phases. Reading dates and labels helps separate the historic site from modern interventions. Above the port, Glover Garden brings together nine traditional buildings, including the former home of Scottish merchant Thomas Glover, as well as paths and viewpoints. In October 2026 it generally stays open until 8:00 pm, with selected evenings until 9:30 pm; adult admission is ¥1,300. Much of the route is sloped and cobbled, although ramps, moving walkways and a loan electric wheelchair are available. Seasonal schedules and events can alter the hours, so do not arrive near closing time assuming the walk will be quick. For a full day, spend the morning at Dejima and take a tram or walk towards Oura and Minami-Yamate in the afternoon. Dejima explains the trading system and life inside the enclave; Glover Garden focuses on domestic architecture, residence and the port landscape. If you have time for only one, choose Dejima for the Dutch-trade story or Glover for houses, views and an outdoor route. The hillside, that day’s closing time and how long you spend reading will determine what fits.

Bottom line

Dejima and Glover Garden complement one another: begin at the trading enclave and finish on the Minami-Yamate hillside. Check Glover Garden’s seasonal closing time and allow for the slopes.
