Fukusaya stands in Funadaikumachi, near the old port district and Chinatown. Its castella is known for a moist, pronounced crumb and zarame sugar crystals that remain at the base. The shop sells whole cakes, gift boxes and individually wrapped portions, which are useful for tasting before choosing. It now opens daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm after ending its Wednesday closure in 2025. Some visitors advise arriving earlier because popular items may sell out.

Bunmeido Souhonten’s central shop is in Edomachi, near Dejima. The company explains that it is distinct from other Japanese firms using the Bunmeido name. Its recipe uses Nanban eggs developed for castella, Japanese wheat and glutinous-rice syrup; zarame adds a slight crunch at the bottom. Alongside the classic cake, it offers matcha and chocolate versions, wrapped portions, castella roll, Mikasayama and dried ginger sweets. The official shop directory lists daily hours of 9 am to 6 pm.

Public comments often describe Fukusaya as richer and sweeter, with moist cake and a pronounced sugar base; Bunmeido is sometimes described as milder and convenient for its smaller portions.
