Establish which application the household actually needs

The JCPS registration and school-choice page asks new students, students returning from another district and households adding a child to register. Current students should not be registered again merely because the household is updating information. Families whose address has changed use the Parent Portal update process and provide current proof of residence in the parent or guardian's name.

The page identifies proof dated within 30 days and accepted categories including gas/electric or water bills, an authentic lease or closing document, an employee paycheck or stub, and government correspondence. Prepare the applicable record before beginning; a phone number or an informal address statement does not replace the district's published process. Ask the Office of School Choice if the family's living arrangement needs a different documentation route.

Address assignment and program choice are different decisions

School Finder, linked by JCPS, returns choices using the exact home address. Incoming kindergarten students and elementary students who have moved have an elementary application route. Middle and high students moving to a new zone update their address and enroll at the new zone school. Magnet and other specified program applications have separate requirements; do not assume that changing the address automatically gains entry to a desired program.

The 2026–27 Choices Guides organize elementary, middle and high options, with translations and prospective-student tour resources. Use them to ask specific questions about learning support, language services, school-day timing and before- or after-school care. A useful comparison is one the family can act on, rather than a ranking based on unrelated online stars.

Check transfers and transport before committing to a plan

JCPS warns that transfers are not guaranteed, depend on capacity and may not include transportation. Its landing page gives March 5, 2027 as the current transfer window's end, while the linked official application form displays March 7. These dates conflict. Confirm the deadline with the district instead of relying on the later date. Registration for a newly arrived child should not be treated as closed solely because an earlier program-choice window has passed.

Transport also changed in 2026. TARC's new-network page says its August 2 redesign no longer serves Doss, Eastern, Fern Creek, Moore and Southern high schools. That statement concerns public TARC buses, not a blanket finding about JCPS school-bus eligibility. Check the exact school, address and current transport arrangement separately; an old commute plan may no longer work.
