Moving to Memphis, Tennessee: what should I check about utilities and my daily commute?

Choosing a home in Memphis involves two journeys: getting the household connected and getting its residents to work, school or appointments. Both depend on the address. A promising rental can become less practical when the utility account is incomplete or the bus used to assess the commute has changed. Current MLGW and MATA information provides a useful starting point before signing.

Establish who opens the utility account

Ask the landlord which services are included in the rent and which accounts the tenant must open. Put the arrangement in the lease and distinguish a new connection from a transfer. MLGW's request-service page provides separate start, stop and transfer requests. Use the route matching the actual move, and keep its confirmation with the tenancy documents.

The request does not replace the Residential Service Agreement. MLGW requires a completed agreement, with the name matching the utility bill, and two valid identification documents, one with a recognizable photograph. Existing account holders can submit it through My Account, under Accounts and Service Agreement. The published residential contact is 901-544-6549. Ask about the status of the particular application rather than assuming that submitting a form guarantees an activation date.

Deposit information also needs its qualifier. MLGW publishes a minimum $200 deposit for credit-risk applicants; it is not described as a universal charge for every new resident. Its page describes eight $25 payments for new customers choosing that arrangement and a bill credit after a 24-month Good Pay record. Confirm the deposit assessed to the account and how any installment option applies before treating those figures as the household's final cost.

Test the commute against the September 2026 network

MATA's service changes took effect September 6, 2026. The current notice describes a separate Hudson–University of Memphis service on Route 2 with intervals ranging from 30 to 90 minutes. Routes 8 and 36 received changes in frequency and operating spans. These details make an older journey plan an unreliable basis for choosing a home.

Check both directions at the actual travel times. A route that reaches work in the morning may offer a different return pattern after an evening shift or on Sunday. Use the schedules and trip-planning links on MATA's official site, then inspect the walk to the stop, transfers and final connection. Published intervals describe a schedule; they do not guarantee a particular vehicle's arrival.

MATA's Zero Fare pilot, launched November 16, 2025, has been extended. Its current page gives no new end date. MATAplus still requires eligibility and normal reservations. The September update separately advertises Groove On-Demand at $1.25 per ride, so the free-fare announcement should not be applied indiscriminately to every transport product. Recheck the fare notice close to moving day.

Compare an address through practical questions

For each shortlisted home, record rent, the allocation of utilities, deposit conditions and the tested journey. Visit at the times that matter to the household and ask about parking or building access if either affects daily life. Memphis's official 311 channel handles municipal service requests; MLGW and MATA remain the appropriate starting points for their own accounts and services. This produces a comparison based on the resident's needs, without assigning an unsupported affordability or safety label to an entire neighborhood.
