Test the journey on the network that actually operates

TARC launched its redesigned network on August 2, 2026. Routes, numbers and stops changed, and its current page identifies areas that lost service, including Louisville International Airport and several outer corridors. A rental advertisement promising a nearby bus may describe the previous network. Enter the exact home and destination in the official trip-planning resources, then test the journey at work or school arrival time and again for the return. Check the route branch as well as the route number, and the walk from the stop to the door.

The current fare page lists a $2.25 adult fixed-route trip. Cash requires exact change and provides no transfer; the same stored-value fare with MyTARC card or mobile includes transfers within two hours of initial boarding. A 24-hour pass costs $5 and begins at first use. These distinctions matter when a home requires two buses. August's introductory free-ride period has ended; it is not a continuing benefit for new residents.

Arrange utilities as part of the lease, not after the van arrives

Louisville Water separates starting, stopping or transferring an existing service from applying for a new meter connection. Use its service-request page for the correct process. Ask the landlord who holds and pays the account, and record the answer in the lease. Verify any deposit, requested documents and service date with the company; this guide does not promise same-day activation or invent a standard move-in charge.

Customer service is 502-583-6610, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. The published downtown office at 550 South Third Street closes earlier, at 4:30 p.m. Phone hours do not establish walk-in hours. Keeping the written confirmation, move-in date and first meter reading together makes a later billing question easier to explain.

Confirm the home and the family's next steps

Long-term rental units must be registered with Louisville Metro. The official registry instructions explain searching the license system by street and Long Term Rental License. A registration is a useful document check, not proof that every repair is complete. Inspect the actual unit and record unresolved issues before committing.

For children, use the exact address in JCPS School Finder, reached through the school-choice page. Registration, school application and transfer are different processes. Confirm after-school arrangements and transport before assuming the closest school is the assigned one. A practical comparison ends with written lease costs, a workable journey and a clear school process, rather than a neighborhood label alone.
