MESG is a Mississippi merit grant for residents at approved public and nonprofit private colleges. Unlike HELP, its main entry point is a strong academic record rather than a Pell-based financial gap. It serves first certificates, associate, or bachelor’s degrees and should not be confused with MTAG, which has separate criteria and its own existing guide.

High-school applicants generally need a 3.5 cumulative GPA and a national ACT score of 29 or an accepted SAT equivalent; National Merit semifinalists or finalists may qualify under the published rules. Students who apply after starting college face a limited window and must earn the required college GPA within a specified credit range. Confirm the pathway against the program page and cohort documents.

The grant may provide up to $2,500 per academic year, capped at tuition and required fees, for up to eight semesters or until degree completion. It requires full-time enrollment and annual renewal; falling below 12 credits in a semester may suspend eligibility and require a later full-time term before reinstatement. The current guide says summer is not covered.

Students must submit MAAPP each year; the MESG application deadline is September 15, with supporting documents due October 15. Awards depend on available funds and renewal priorities, so meeting academic criteria does not guarantee an automatic payment. Keep MAAPP, residency, test-score, and transcript confirmations; the campus must receive the award notice to credit the account.

An entry credential does not remove continuing review. If you start college before applying, check the window for current students, required college GPA, and maximum credits allowed before entering the program. A high ACT score alone does not satisfy those rules or replace annual review.

The $2,500 ceiling is annual and cannot exceed tuition and required fees; living expenses are not covered by that wording. Renewal requires another application and full-time enrollment, and available funds may prioritize renewals. Ask the college how MESG combines with Pell and other scholarships to avoid an unexpected balance.

The published calendar sets September 15 for MAAPP and October 15 for documents. The MAAPP date has passed as of this review; an incomplete or late application may be excluded even when a student meets the merit criteria. Keep the confirmation screen and ask the college whether anything is missing before assuming the award has posted.

Before deciding, request an individual estimate showing aid applied first, remaining tuition, required fees, and outside costs. Confirm residency, credits, renewal, deadlines, and documents against current official guidance, and keep submission receipts.

Read the official program profile and the FAFSA application guide; ask the college for an individual balance review.

Checked October 13, 2026 against official sources. Eligibility, award amounts, funding, and deadlines vary by program and can change by cycle. A grant does not necessarily cover housing, meals, books, or transportation. File FAFSA or the applicable state application, confirm your balance with the financial-aid office, and do not pay third parties to apply.

Bottom line

Compare net cost and excluded charges before committing; the financial-aid office confirms eligibility and the final balance.
