Michigan Competitive Scholarship still appears in the state program list, but it is no longer available to students who graduated from high school—or earned an equivalent credential—in 2023 or later. It remains relevant to earlier cohorts who can still renew and meet the requirements; Michigan says the program will permanently end on September 30, 2029. That distinction matters when comparing aid: new graduates should review Michigan Achievement Scholarship or other options instead of budgeting for Competitive in a first year.
For cohorts that retain eligibility, the scholarship combines merit and need. Published criteria include an SAT score of at least 1,200 before entering college, undergraduate status while pursuing a first degree, a FAFSA, and residency, institution, and satisfactory-progress requirements. Read the state program page with the annual manual because renewal deadlines and documentation depend on the aid year and cohort. Not every college or program qualifies.
The published maximum is up to $1,500 per year toward tuition and mandatory fees; the actual award depends on campus certification and available funds. For 2026–27, FAFSA had to be completed by July 1, a date that has passed as of this review. If you belong to an earlier cohort, check MiSSG and ask the college whether your file can renew; if you graduated in 2023 or later, do not wait for an exception the program does not publicly offer—look promptly for the appropriate successor aid.
Before accepting aid, compare the net balance with tuition, fees, and other costs; confirm requirements and deadlines with the official source and ask the college financial-aid office for guidance.
Read the official program profile and FAFSA guide; request an individual review before enrolling.
