Michigan uses Michigan Achievement Scholarship as an umbrella for different routes. If you plan a bachelor’s degree at a public or private university, review the university Michigan Achievement Scholarship profile. If you prefer to start with a certificate or associate degree at a community or Tribal College, read about the Community College Guarantee. The university track uses FAFSA need; the community-college path has no SAI ceiling, although both require state residency, full-time enrollment and a completed FAFSA.
The 2026–27 university path requires an SAI of 30,000 or less, Michigan residency since the previous July 1, high-school graduation or equivalency in 2023 or later, eligible federal status, full-time enrollment at a participating school and college entry within fifteen months after high school. There is no state minimum GPA, but satisfactory academic progress applies. The Community College Guarantee keeps residency, FAFSA, citizenship/status and full-time requirements but does not test need through an SAI limit. Dependent students should check the parent residency reported on FAFSA and confirm the campus classification.
For a university, FAFSA is the application; there is no separate scholarship form. The college calculates the offer and students can follow eligibility through MiSSG. The state FAQ says there is no separate FAFSA deadline, while the 2026–27 manual sets August 6, 2027 as the final day to become eligible during that year. An individual’s fifteen-month entry window may end earlier. Spring 2025 graduates must start by fall 2026; spring 2026 graduates by fall 2027. The community-college path also has no second application but remains tied to timely entry. Do not wait for the state’s last date before confirming admission, credits and FAFSA receipt.
The university route advertises up to $5,500 a year and $27,500 across five years, potentially combining a minimum award with a last-dollar component. The Community College Guarantee covers in-district tuition, contact hours and mandatory fees; Pell-eligible students may receive a $1,000 bonus for other education costs. “Tuition-free” does not include every book, meal, rent or transportation expense. Out-of-district tuition may be calculated differently. Ask the college for a net semester budget listing cost of attendance, other grants, covered charges and remaining costs.
Renewal rules also limit how long students can use the award. Support may continue for up to five years toward a bachelor’s degree, with no more than three years at a community or Tribal College, if the student renews FAFSA, remains a Michigan resident, enrolls full-time and meets SAP. Wayne State and Grand Valley State students described missing portal awards in August; those posts do not prove the cause or a statewide timeline. Ask financial aid to verify FAFSA completion, SAI, residency, graduation date, entry window, enrollment, school allocation and when MiSSG will show certification. Review the final aid notice and do not count on a refund before the credit appears on your account.
Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
