Michigan Achievement Scholarship includes several pathways for recent state graduates: the Community College Guarantee, study at participating public or private universities, and career training for an industry-recognized certificate. The August 2026 fact sheet lists up to $5,500 per year for up to five years at universities and up to $2,000 per year for up to two years in career training. The Community College Guarantee covers eligible in-district tuition for up to three years and includes a $1,000 bonus for Pell-eligible students.
For the university pathway, students must be Michigan residents, graduate in 2023 or later, and complete FAFSA; the fact sheet lists a Student Aid Index of $30,000 or less. Career training is applied for through MiSSG and its initial requirements differ from the university scholarship. All pathways require a program and school that meet state definitions, and awards depend on the year’s budget and financial circumstances, not just a diploma.
The first step is to choose the right pathway and verify the campus, home district, and training program before enrolling. Do not assume “free college” means every charge is covered: the benefit concerns tuition under each pathway’s rules, while housing, food, transportation, and materials may remain the student’s responsibility. File FAFSA early, create or check a MiSSG account, and request a campus cost-and-aid comparison before accepting the package.
Before accepting aid, verify in writing who may apply, what costs it covers, whether it renews, and how it interacts with FAFSA and other scholarships. Confirm dates in the official portal and ask the college for your remaining net cost.
Read the program profile and FAFSA guide; ask for an individual review before committing.
