Where should I eat Mexican food in Fort Worth, Texas? Cabrito, mole and regional cooking

Don Artemio’s Saltillo roots and Tinies’ Near Southside table reveal Mexican cooking in Fort Worth through cabrito, pipián, mole and regional seafood dishes.

Mexican dining in Fort Worth, Texas, becomes more interesting when a restaurant’s regional point of view is allowed to lead the meal. Don Artemio Mexican Heritage begins with Saltillo and northeastern Mexico; Tinies, in Near Southside, moves through several regional preparations in a restored neighborhood building. Both offer tacos, but neither needs to be reduced to a taco destination. Their menus make room for cabrito, mole, pipián and fish dishes that change what a diner can expect from a Mexican dinner.

Don Artemio’s Saltillo connection is visible before the first plate through clay brick, textiles and references to Coahuila. Chef and creator Juan Ramón Cárdenas has also studied cabrito extensively, a background that gives the kid-goat dishes particular context. Slow braising and confit preparations share the dinner menu with handmade blue-corn tortillas. Fried nopales provide another route into the house’s northeastern Mexican identity, while mole-based dishes show that the cooking reaches beyond one regional boundary.

The menu does not require every guest to follow the same path. A poblano wrapped in puff pastry and filled with cheese and pecans offers a substantial vegetarian main course. Fish with Oaxacan mole negro and enchiladas with tamarind mole shift the focus toward sauce and texture. The current culinary team identifies Rodrigo Cárdenas as culinary director and Marcial Riojas Lucio as chef de cuisine, keeping the restaurant’s founding idea connected to the people now carrying it out.

Tinies gives its own dinner a different setting. Sarah Castillo named it after her mother, Christina, known as Tinie, and the restaurant occupies a restored 1930s building in Near Southside. Exposed brick and an upstairs agave lounge connect the meal to the building’s adaptation, while the current kitchen, with Ix-Chel Ornelas and Guadalupe Sanchez, develops a menu that rewards comparison. Chicken with green pipián, pork with an al pastor treatment and seafood in regional sauces are separate arguments for taking the main courses seriously.

Its smaller plates can introduce that range without making the entire dinner a series of tacos. Plantain bites filled with black beans and potato taquitos give a shared table meat-free starting points. The tlayuda, by contrast, includes chorizo as well as beans and Oaxaca cheese. Trout prepared in a zarandeado style and octopus with a Veracruz-inspired sauce give fish and seafood their own identities, while guava cheesecake or coconut-lemongrass flan carries the comparison into dessert.

For a group occasion, the service terms deserve a place in the planning. Don Artemio publishes a minimum spend for parties of five or more on Friday and Saturday, before tax and gratuity. Tinies adds a service charge for parties of six or more. With those conditions understood, the choice can return to the food: a Saltillo-rooted dinner that puts cabrito and northeastern Mexico in focus, or a Near Southside table that moves among sauces, seafood and an agave-led social setting.
