Students who work or care for family may need to progress with fewer than 12 credits. Maryland’s Part-Time Grant is designed for undergraduate degree-seekers taking 3 to 11 credits per term at a participating two- or four-year institution. It is not intended for graduate study or non-degree training.
The grant is need-based and can be pursued through FAFSA or MHEC One-App. The official annual range is $200 to $2,000, for up to eight years if the student remains eligible. Funding is allocated to institutions, and a school may opt out, so participation and internal dates can differ across Maryland colleges.
Dependent students and the parent listed must meet Maryland in-state tuition rules; independent applicants must satisfy the applicable residency standard. MHEC lists March 1 as the key FAFSA or One-App date. The campus determines need and the final amount, so ask whether extra documents are needed and whether your 3, 6, or 11 credits qualify.
The grant reduces education costs, but the maximum does not mean tuition is fully covered; fees, transportation, housing, and books need a separate budget. Check how the school coordinates Pell, local scholarships, and state aid, and whether dropping below three credits triggers repayment. MHEC provides program and application information; the campus clarifies its own calendar.
Before accepting, request an individual estimate showing aid applied first, residual tuition, mandatory fees, and indirect costs. Confirm residency, credits, renewal, deadlines, and documents with the official program office; keep a copy and submission confirmation. If your situation is unclear, get a written answer from the campus before committing to tuition or housing.
Read the program profile and official FAFSA guide; ask the college for an individual balance review.

A scholarship may cover only tuition or specified fees, not housing, meals, books, or transportation. File the FAFSA when applicable, confirm your balance with the financial-aid office, and do not pay third parties to apply.
Compare net cost and excluded charges before committing; the financial-aid office confirms eligibility and the final balance.
