Between Magome in Gifu and Tsumago in Nagano, the Nakasendo becomes an eight-kilometre mountain walk rather than a line on a map. The valley tourism office estimates about three hours at a relaxed pace. The trail links two former post towns that have retained traditional streets and houses, passing through forest, alongside streams and by small waterfalls. Starting in Magome and walking towards Tsumago reduces the overall climb and finishes on a historic street beneath the mountains.
Logistics begin before you lace up. Trains from Nagoya or Matsumoto reach Nakatsugawa or Nagiso, followed by local buses to the towns. Check the day’s timetable and plan the return from the end where you will finish: Nagiso Station is about a 40-minute walk from Tsumago, though bus and taxi options are available. The trail is marked in English; water, grippy footwear and an early start still make it easier to walk steadily and reach onward connections in time.
The official Kiso tourism site lists a ¥500-per-item luggage transfer between the Magome and Tsumago tourist centres, but it runs within a limited schedule and requires luggage to be dropped off before noon. Check that the service operates on your date and confirm the collection point. Without it, carry only a comfortable day pack. Bells are installed at some points to deter wildlife; the practical advice is to ring them as you pass, keep your distance from animals and stay on the marked trail.
On arrival, leave time to explore the streets and do not assume every business will still be open after the walk. Magome tends to have more shops and places to eat; Tsumago has a quieter scale, wooden houses and a central vehicle restriction from 10 am to 4 pm. You can walk only part of the trail and return by bus, or complete it and connect from Nagiso. Carry cash for small businesses and check the last service: the scenery invites you to linger, but rural transport does not run like the Tokyo subway.
Profiles of the recommended places: Magome-juku · Tsumago-juku
If you plan to walk from Magome to Tsumago, check the morning bus, return train and luggage-transfer deadline before setting out. That leaves time to explore both post towns after the roughly three-hour walk.

Magome-juku climbs a hillside in Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, making the geography of historic travel tangible: walkers moved slowly among inns, workshops and resting places. Its stone-paved street retains wooden houses, water channels and waterwheels alongside the ascent. It was one of the post st
Reviews describe Magome as livelier and more commercial than Tsumago, with sweets, souvenir and food shops along a concentrated main street. A practical point also recurs: shops may close early, and the town becomes quiet once day-trippers leave. Waterwheels and the view from the upper end are popular photo stops, but the slope calls for an easy pace, especially in summer or with luggage. This is not a closed museum; it remains a town with residents and businesses.

Tsumago-juku lies beneath the Kiso Mountains in Nagiso, Nagano Prefecture. Its main street gathers wooden houses, former inns and historic buildings on a quieter scale than a large city centre. It was a post station on the Nakasendo, and preservation efforts aim to retain the continuity of its tradi
Visitors often remember the shift from forest path to historic street on arrival; reviews praise the preserved houses and quiet atmosphere. Some suggest coming early or late in the day to avoid larger groups, though shops and buildings open to visitors may close earlier. Gohei-mochi, oyaki and small shops offer local stops, but not every business opens daily. Tsumago is best explored on foot and with respect for the fact that its houses are not sets: residents, private spaces and quiet are part of the place.
