TOPS is a set of Louisiana merit awards—Opportunity, Performance, Honors, and Excellence—for students meeting high-school rules and attending an eligible institution. It is not one scholarship with one threshold: GPA and course/test combinations vary by award tier and graduating class.
Criteria include residency and eligible graduation, an approved high-school curriculum, and GPA/ACT or SAT thresholds set by LOSFA. For 2026 graduates, the initial application deadline is July 1 after graduation; late filing can cost one or two semesters of eligibility. FAFSA is the broader route if you also seek Pell or other aid; a TOPS-only online application is available.
Standard TOPS applies to tuition at an eligible institution; Performance/Honors/Excellence may add stipends under annual rules. There is no single statewide dollar amount: the award depends on school, tier, appropriation, and term. Awards generally cap at eight semesters and require continuous enrollment, academic progress, and earned credits.
File FAFSA or the correct LOSFA application, monitor Louisiana Award System, and confirm high-school records were received. For a 2026 graduate, the complete application deadline is July 1, 2027 before the first college academic year; file several weeks early. Review the actual award because late filing may reduce semesters and changes in major or enrollment may affect renewal.
Before accepting an aid package, compare your individual notice with the bill and ask what happens if you change enrollment, major, or campus. Read the program profile and consult the administering agency; your institution’s financial-aid office confirms your individual determination.

Eligibility does not guarantee funding: confirm the academic year, your file, and net cost with the program and your campus financial-aid office.
TOPS includes four award tiers and rules vary by graduating class; check LOSFA before choosing an application route.
