The route begins at Kii-Tanabe, a railway station on the Wakayama coast and one of the gateways to the Kumano Kodo. The bus to Hongu is not a frequent urban link: the journey takes about two hours through the mountainous peninsula, stopping at Yunomine and Kawayu hot springs and at points along the pilgrimage route. Before leaving, check the Kii-Tanabe–Hongu timetable and confirm which stop is closest to the place you plan to visit.
Next to the station, the TANABE Tourist Information Center is open year-round from 9 am to 6 pm. Staff can help distinguish services and stops, useful because different companies share stops and some routes change seasonally. The tourism bureau publishes schedules and warns that both fares and services may change. Keep a copy of the outbound and return timetable: a day visit depends on fitting both journeys, not simply catching the first bus.
At Hongu-Taisha-mae, a stone staircase leads to Kumano Hongu Taisha. The grounds are free and the shrine office is open 8 am–5 pm; the Treasure Hall has separate admission and shorter hours, 9 am–4 pm. From there, walk to Oyunohara, the former shrine site, marked by a 33.9-metre torii gate. Allow at least an hour for both places so the visit does not become a race back to the bus.
Visitors praise the shrine’s atmosphere, while public feedback also notes the stairs and the limited room for improvisation on rural schedules. Carry water and a snack if you do not have a planned stop, check the last return bus and do not rely only on times shown by a map app. If you want to walk a section of the Kumano Kodo, choose the trail first and verify that access and return buses fit the daylight. The visit to Hongu itself can fill a well-planned day.

Kii-Tanabe is a rail gateway to the Kii Peninsula and the pilgrimage routes of the Kumano Kodo. From this Kisei Line station, buses connect to Takijiri-oji, Hongu and the hot-spring villages of Yunomine and Kawayu. For travellers without a car, it is an important transfer point: the mountain region
Public comments describe a clean, functional station and mention how easy it is to pick up maps and timetables before setting off. The station is not an attraction in itself, but its practical value increases when planning a trip. Some hikers prefer to stay overnight in Tanabe before a trail day rather than rely on a very early bus; others simply transfer from train to bus. The right choice depends on the route, daylight and luggage.

Visitors mention the quiet forest setting and wooden architecture, as well as the effort required to climb the stairs. Grippy footwear and short pauses help, especially in wet weather. The visit extends beyond the main building: walk to Oyunohara, the former sacred site, where a 33.9-metre torii marks the entrance. Together, the shrine, rivers and pilgrimage routes make the landscape part of the experience.
