Kentucky CAP Grant 2026–27: need-based aid, FAFSA, and minimum enrollment

Kentucky’s CAP Grant offers up to $2,500 at two-year and $5,300 at four-year institutions for residents with financial need. Funds are awarded by FAFSA date and can run out.

The College Access Program (CAP) Grant helps Kentucky residents with financial need pursue undergraduate study at participating institutions, including universities, two-year colleges, technical schools, and certain training institutions. For 2026–27, KHEAA lists maximum awards of $2,500 at two-year schools and $5,300 at four-year schools. These are ceilings; an individual award depends on eligibility and funding.

A student must be a Kentucky resident, demonstrate financial need, enroll at least half time in a program at least two years long, and have no past-due obligations to KHEAA or federal student-aid programs. Eligibility is limited to the equivalent of four full-time terms in a two-year program or eight in a four-year program. Confirm the participating-school list and how your college counts enrollment.

The state application is the FAFSA for the academic year. KHEAA awards funds by FAFSA completion date and encourages students to file as soon as it opens; an unprocessed or incorrect FAFSA can delay consideration. Qualification alone does not guarantee an award. Check MyKHEAA and your campus portal for documents, academic progress, and what remains unpaid in your budget.

CAP and the Kentucky Tuition Grant (KTG) are different programs. CAP includes eligible public and private schools with at least half-time enrollment, while KTG requires full-time study at a private Kentucky college. Before comparing them, check hours, institution type, term limits, and how other aid reduces calculated need; ask campus financial aid for an itemized remaining balance.

To begin, identify the program administrator and the financial-aid office that certifies your enrollment. Review the program profile and requirements; for an individual account, also use the responsible state agency. Before accepting funds, compare the award letter with an itemized campus budget.

Information checked on October 12, 2026 against official sources. Eligibility does not guarantee an award: funding, deadlines, and college requirements can vary. Confirm the cycle, outstanding tasks, and net cost directly with the agency and your institution’s financial-aid office.

Bottom line

File FAFSA early and verify the school is on the list: CAP is first-come, and its maximums do not guarantee your award.
