Kansas Teacher Service Scholarship: aid for teachers in shortage areas

The Kansas Teacher Service Scholarship is merit-based aid with a work obligation designed to address teacher shortages. It can support future teachers seeking licensure through a bachelor’s program, licensed teachers pursuing an endorsement in a hard-to-fill field, and some master’s programs. The Board of Regents identifies shortage disciplines and regions by cycle; a major eligible last year may not qualify in the current application.

Applicants must be Kansas residents and attend an approved institution in the state. Eligibility is tied to teacher preparation in hard-to-fill disciplines or plans to teach in an underserved geographic area. The current list includes public and private universities. The agency says juniors and seniors commonly receive priority and allows up to ten semesters combining undergraduate and graduate study, subject to funding and satisfactory academic progress.

The priority date is June 1. The 2026–27 priority deadline has passed; the Board may accept later applications if funding remains, but an extension is not guaranteed. A new application includes the state aid form, official college transcripts, an academic or employment recommendation, and a teaching license for current teachers. Renewals require an annual application but generally do not resubmit every document. Confirm which subjects count as shortage fields this year.

Recipients agree to teach in Kansas for one year for each funded year after completing the program. Failure to serve can convert aid into debt under the agreement. Ask which districts, licenses, and periods qualify, how employment is verified, and what happens if you change fields. The state overview lists up to $5,830 per year, but awards depend on the application and funding; request an estimate from the Board of Regents and review the current form.

Before applying, confirm the current cycle and deadline, participating institution, enrollment load, and required documents. Keep copies of the FAFSA or state form, transcripts, supporting records, and submission confirmation. Ask whether renewal is automatic, which expenses are covered, and how the award coordinates with other grants. Do not rely on funds until you receive an official award and written balance estimate.

Compare net cost and aid type: a grant, forgivable loan, and service scholarship work differently. Confirm dates and requirements directly with the administrator for the current cycle.

Read the program profile and federal FAFSA guide; confirm with the administrator how the aid coordinates.
