Kansas Comprehensive Grant: need-based aid at public and private colleges

KCG helps Kansas residents with financial need at participating colleges. FAFSA is the application; 2026–27 maximums are $4,000 public and $10,000 private, but each school sets its deadline.

The Kansas Comprehensive Grant (KCG) is a need-based state grant for Kansas residents enrolled full time at participating public and independent institutions. For 2026–27, the Board of Regents’ student page lists approximate ranges of $100–$4,000 at public schools and $200–$10,000 at private schools. However, May 2026 Board material describes a $4,500 public maximum. Because official materials differ, confirm the cap for your cycle with the college. Awards depend on need and enrollment; Kansas residency alone does not guarantee an amount.

File FAFSA and list the school codes for colleges you are considering. The Board does not publish one statewide student deadline for KCG; ask each campus for its FAFSA priority date. Funding is limited, and the state page says it reaches about one in three eligible students, so submit documents early and confirm availability with financial aid.

Beyond financial need, program rules include state residency, full-time enrollment, academic progress, and term limits. At private schools, the maximum is tied to tuition/fees and cost differences from public institutions; a $10,000 ceiling does not mean every student receives that amount. The college calculates need and communicates the award.

KCG may matter when comparing public and private colleges, but request a written estimate showing tuition, fees, other scholarships, and net balance. Confirm renewal and progress with financial aid. Do not confuse it with Kansas Promise Scholarship, which supports certain high-demand community-college programs, or Kansas Education Opportunity Scholarship, which uses first-generation and other criteria.

To begin, identify the program administrator and the financial-aid office that certifies your enrollment. Review the program profile and requirements; for an individual account, also use the responsible state agency. Before accepting funds, compare the award letter with an itemized campus budget.

Bottom line

File FAFSA early, ask your college for its priority date, and confirm the current award cap; official sources differ on the public maximum.
