Kansas City, Kansas tacos: al pastor downtown and two markets worth making a meal of

El Camino Real, Bonito Michoacan and San Antonio connect fresh tortillas, taco counters and neighborhood shopping on the Kansas side of the metro.

In Kansas City, Kansas, a taco meal can begin in an open kitchen or in the middle of a market. El Camino Real gives al pastor a fresh corn tortilla and a simple dressing. Bonito Michoacán combines its taco counter with meat, produce and groceries. In Armourdale, San Antonio makes the tortillas that connect a restaurant order with food taken home for another day.

This guide stays on the Kansas side of the metropolitan area. That geographical detail matters: several business names have counterparts across the state line, and a related grocery is not necessarily another taco restaurant. The profiles keep the actual dining addresses, branch contacts and service options together.

El Camino Real: begin with pastor

The Downtown restaurant at 903 North 7th Street Trafficway is associated with al pastor and house-made corn tortillas. Onion, cilantro and lime leave room for the pork to remain the center of the taco. Asada, chicken and beef head allow a mixed order; thicker masa preparations and tortas offer other formats.

The same business operates at 1147 Argentine Boulevard, with its own telephone. Its recent announcement makes the ordering choice clear: call the intended branch for pickup or use its delivery listing. An older review saying the restaurant did not accept that platform should not outweigh the business’s later announcement.

Bonito Michoacán: lunch beside the market

At 1150 Minnesota Avenue, groceries and prepared food share the visit. Asada, pastor, carnitas and barbacoa give the taco order familiar starting points; discada combines several meats in a different preparation. The salsa bar makes the final seasoning a personal choice.

The wider menu includes gorditas, flautas, tortas, burritos and soups. That breadth helps when the group wants more than tacos. Recent public accounts appreciate the pastor, carnitas and green sauce, while the presence of a line is a practical part of a busy counter meal. Current listings give seven-day service from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

San Antonio: the tortilleria is part of the meal

Victor Contreras opened the Armourdale market in 2005. At 830 Kansas Avenue, tacos arrive with meat on tortilla and the diner supplies onion, cilantro, lime and salsa from the bar. Asada, pastor, barbacoa and deshebrada make a useful side-by-side order, with tamales or a torta for another appetite.

The same visit can supply fresh tortillas and groceries for home. A newer family store at 800 Kansas Avenue is a different operation, reported without a taco counter; the restaurant destination remains 830. Its long market hours are useful, but should not be read as a guarantee that every cooked filling is available from the first minute of opening.

Bottom line

Choose El Camino for a pastor-focused meal, Bonito for a market lunch, or San Antonio for tacos and fresh tortillas to take home.
