The Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago serves Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Residence determines the responsible post, so a temporary stay in Chicago for work or travel does not by itself change jurisdiction.
The address is Olympia Centre, Suite 1100, 737 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60611. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., but passport, certificate and visa documents are accepted only from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 to 4 p.m. The Japan Information Center for cultural and educational enquiries is in Suite 1000 and has separate contacts.
The consulate says online passport applications through Japan’s designated system began on August 25, 2026. Passports are produced in Japan, however, and delivery may take about a month after acceptance. The former provisional postal application for people living far away has ended, so online filing should not be confused with mailing an application.
Certificates follow different routes—counter, online or electronic—and only some, including residence, birth and marriage certificates, may be applied for and delivered by mail to distant residents. Visa service also depends on eligibility and residence; people outside the district may be directed elsewhere. Start with the exact name of the procedure, then match it to the required documents and submission method.
Yuichi Oba took up the consul-general post in September 2026. The official site links a building map and directions and lists 312-280-0400 and ryoji1@cg.mofa.go.jp for consular enquiries. We could not reliably confirm a rating and review count for the exact Google Maps listing, so no figures are recorded here.
