Maskay guide

How can you visit the sake museums in Kobe’s Nada district?

Hakutsuru and Kiku-Masamune present two sides of Nada’s sake tradition, with free admission, tastings and rail access; compare hours, closure days and group rules.

East of central Kobe, Nada-gogō brings together five sake-producing districts between the mountains and the bay. The breweries grew through access to suitable rice, good water and transport routes that carried barrels to the port. Two museums introduce this history without requiring a tour booking: Hakutsuru preserves an old brewery as an exhibition, while Kiku-Masamune focuses on brewing tools, the kimoto method and barrel-making. Admission is free at both, but their calendars differ. Hakutsuru is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, with admission until 4:00 pm. Its route explains production stages with original tools and audiovisual material; a tasting and shop may be available at the end, subject to stock and operations. It closes during summer and New Year holidays, and groups of ten or more must book. It is about a five-minute walk from Hanshin Sumiyoshi or 15 minutes from JR Sumiyoshi. Visitors starting in Sannomiya should allow for the train and walk rather than arriving close to final admission. Kiku-Masamune also opens from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm and is free, but from April 2026 it closes on Tuesdays. If Tuesday is a public holiday, it opens that day and closes the following Wednesday; groups of ten or more need a reservation. The museum is a ten-minute walk from Hanshin Uozaki Station or a few minutes from Minami-Uozaki on the Rokko Liner. Reviews often mention helpful staff, handcrafted objects and shop tastings; some visitors note that visual aids or translation help because part of the material is in Japanese. Visit one museum on a short stop or link both with other Nada breweries over half a day. Do not treat them as neighbouring rooms: allow time for walking, stations and a break. Tastings are not guaranteed every day and are not the same as a production tour; drivers should not drink. The profiles help you choose according to historical interest and logistics: Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum and Kiku-Masamune Sake Brewery Museum.

Bottom line

Both museums are free and complementary; check weekly closures, leave enough time and treat tastings as a variable part of the visit.
