At Iwami Ginzan, heritage is not concentrated in one building: it stretches from Omori’s merchant street to forest paths, mine openings and old transport routes. UNESCO inscribed the cultural landscape in 2007, recognising traces of silver extraction and trade networks linking Japan with East Asia and Europe. Visiting only the tunnel therefore leaves part of the story untold. The House of the Kumagai Family introduces the people who managed and traded around the mine; Ryugenji Mabu then reveals the physical scale of underground work.
In Omori, the Kumagai residence covers about 1,500 square metres, with a main house, five storehouses and service buildings. Rebuilt after the 1800 fire and enlarged during the nineteenth century, it is an Important National Cultural Property. Displays of furniture, clothing and household items change in some seasons. Visitors mention the scale of the house, its kitchen rooms and an underground stone chamber; others value staff explanations of how the rooms were used. It is open 9:30–17:00, closed Tuesdays, with published admission of ¥520 for high-school age and above and ¥100 for primary and middle-school pupils.
From the Omori bus stop, Ryugenji Mabu is about a 40-minute walk each way; the bus from Oda-shi Station takes around half an hour. The official first-time guide recommends allowing about two hours for the mine area, including the return walk. The tunnel preserves chisel marks and narrow sections: visitors value its authenticity, while noting limited English interpretation. A local electric cart offers a partial alternative from Ginzan Park for ¥700 each way, but it cannot be reserved, does not run on Wednesdays and may stop in bad weather. Carry water and wear shoes with a firm sole.
The mine is open 9:00–17:00 from March to November and until 16:00 in winter; admission is ¥500 for adults and ¥250 for primary and middle-school pupils. The World Heritage Center continues to provide visitor guidance, tourism information and other services, but its paid exhibition rooms are unavailable from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 for renewal. That distinction matters: the center can still be a point of arrival, but its exhibits should not be the reason for planning a visit during those months. Check the return bus timetable and avoid driving into the historic area. If you have only an hour, the official guide recommends focusing on Omori’s street; allow at least half a day for both the house and mine.
Profiles of the recommended places: House of the Kumagai Family · Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft
The full route needs half a day and a well-timed bus: visit the merchant house and mine tunnel, but do not rely on the Center’s exhibitions during the 2026–2027 renewal.

Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft
183 Omoricho Ni, Oda, Shimane 694-0305, Japan
Ryugenji Mabu changes the scale of Iwami Ginzan: instead of looking at the mine from a viewpoint, visitors enter a hand-cut tunnel and walk between rock walls marked by tools. During the Edo period, this mabu was managed directly by the local magistrate’s office. Shimane’s tourism guide notes that t
Visitors value walking through an actual mine tunnel and seeing tool marks, while noting that the passage is narrow and English interpretation is limited. The walk from Omori is a substantial part of the outing; carry water and check the return bus timetable.
