How do I verify a home-remodeling contractor in Las Vegas, Nevada?

A reassuring conversation and attractive photographs can start a remodeling discussion, but they do not establish that a contractor is authorized for the proposed work. In Las Vegas, the useful first comparison is between the scope of the project and the actual Nevada license. That check should be completed before a deposit or a signature makes the arrangement harder to change.

Match the license to the work and contract amount

The Nevada State Contractors Board provides a license search and separate disciplinary information. Ask for the legal contracting name and license number, then compare them with the entity named in the bid and agreement. A number displayed in an advertisement is not enough if it belongs to another company or does not cover the proposed work.

The Board's consumer guidance tells homeowners to verify the correct classification and monetary limit. The limit is the maximum a contractor may undertake on one or more construction contracts at a single site for a single client. Breaking a project into several papers does not make that definition disappear. If the classification or limit is unclear, contact the Board rather than accepting the contractor's informal explanation as verification. Compare a defined project, not just a final price

The Board recommends at least three bids for the same scope and checking references and completed work. Set out the materials, work areas and tasks so each bidder is pricing the same project. A lower number cannot establish value if one estimate leaves an important stage undecided. Ask who will perform specialist work and identify subcontractors where the arrangement requires them.

Use a clear written contract with a payment schedule, start and completion arrangements, and responsibility for permits. Keep changes, additions and deletions in writing. The Board's bill of rights also emphasizes maintaining a job file with the agreement, change orders and payment records. That record is useful when comparing what was promised with what was delivered, rather than relying on a remembered conversation.

Examine the advance payment and permit route

For residential improvement work, the published down-payment rule is no more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less. The Board identifies exceptions involving a $100,000 consumer-protection bond or specified Board-granted relief. Check an asserted exception in the official record; it is not enough for a salesperson to say the cap does not apply. Payments should track completed work, and the guidance advises avoiding cash and withholding final payment until the agreed work is complete.

Verify the property's jurisdiction before using City of Las Vegas permit services. Its Building and Safety page identifies updated codes effective January 2026 and electronic submission of all new commercial, residential and civil plans from January 1. A small project still requires its own permit assessment; neither a state license nor an owner's willingness to pay substitutes for local authorization.

Google reviews may help frame questions about communication or completion, but this guide does not recommend a company based on an unchecked score. The license, scope, written commitments and permit arrangements establish the first defensible screening.
