Where should I eat Greek food in Astoria, Queens: seafood or Cypriot meze?

Kyclades puts fish at the center of dinner on Ditmars Boulevard. Aliada brings Cypriot specialties and shared meze to Broadway.

A Greek dinner in Astoria, Queens, can begin with a whole fish or with the small dishes that gradually gather around the table. Taverna Kyclades on Ditmars Boulevard and Aliada on Broadway make those two approaches easy to understand. The first gives seafood a clear center, with dips and vegetables alongside it. The second adds Cypriot specialties and a meze format designed for sharing. For a visitor to New York, the neighborhood becomes more interesting when the choice is made through the dishes themselves, rather than through an undifferentiated list of Greek restaurants.

At Kyclades, the beginning can be as simple as comparing spreads. Skordalia uses potato and garlic, tzatziki brings yogurt and cucumber, and tirokafteri gives feta a spicy role. The pikilia gathers four house dips. Eggplant and zucchini chips, spinach pie or grilled octopus then give the order a different texture or temperature. The point is to leave room for the seafood that defines the restaurant, rather than turn the starters into several versions of the same fried course.

The fish choices include branzino, red snapper, dorata, sardines and swordfish. Michelin’s description highlights whole branzino with olive oil and herbs; the restaurant’s own menu widens the choices to shrimp with feta, ouzo and tomato, or sole stuffed with crabmeat. Lemon-roasted potatoes, Swiss chard and beets provide alternatives beside a main. Kyclades suits someone who wants a Greek seafood dinner with a recognizable center and the freedom to choose just a few accompaniments.

Aliada, which opened in Astoria in 2002, gives the meal another emphasis. Its koupepia are grape leaves filled with pork, rice and herbs in tomato-lemon broth. Shieftalia are Cypriot sausages made with minced pork, onion and herbs, wrapped in caul fat and cooked over a live fire. Halloumi appears grilled or inside baked phyllo with sesame, honey, fig jam and thyme. The names may be unfamiliar, but the preparations are concrete enough to help a diner make an informed first choice.

The house’s meat and fish meze formats require at least two people, making sharing part of the order from the outset. Diners can also choose individual dishes, including whole grilled branzino or dorado, octopus and baked pasta with meat sauce, halloumi and béchamel. Roasted cauliflower with tahini, olives, pomegranate seeds and feta gives vegetables a substantial place in the meal. A group interested in the Cypriot side should allow those specialties room alongside the more familiar seafood.

Kyclades is the clearer choice when fish should organize dinner on Ditmars Boulevard. Aliada is especially useful when the occasion calls for shared dishes and an introduction to Cypriot cooking on Broadway. Both remain firmly within Astoria, yet the meals need not resemble one another. Choose a seafood centerpiece or a collective meze, then let the accompaniments support that decision. The result is a Greek dinner with a particular kitchen and a particular part of Queens behind it.
