The Barry Goldwater Summer Research Internship Program is a new initiative expanding undergraduate research experience and is separate from the annual Goldwater Scholarship. For its inaugural summer in 2027, the foundation announced 20 paid ten-week positions at U.S. laboratories. Interns join teams with senior researchers, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and other undergraduates.
The announcement targets college freshmen and sophomores interested in research careers. Listed fields are chemistry; computer and information sciences and engineering; engineering; life sciences; and physics and astronomy. The public announcement does not list a full GPA, citizenship, or prior-experience standard, so applicants should not infer one; consult the application and updates for final eligibility rules.
Applications for summer 2027 are due November 2, 2026, and the foundation says selected applicants will be notified by January 15, 2027. The competition is national and limited to 20 positions, so prepare a clear account of your research interests and follow each portal instruction. Do not confuse this schedule with the annual Goldwater Scholarship, which has different deadlines and campus nomination rules.
Each intern receives $10,500 in support for the ten-week experience. The announcement does not describe a multi-year academic scholarship or guarantee placement in a laboratory chosen by the applicant; it describes positions on collaborative teams across the country. Check the application portal for schedule, housing, travel, eligibility, and documents before committing to the summer. This is program support for that experience, not a recurring annual award.
Confirm the academic year, local deadline and time, who must submit each document, and whether supplemental questions remain. Keep confirmations and recheck the portal after submitting. Ask the school’s financial-aid office how FAFSA, outside awards, and payments coordinate.
Read the aid-program profile and the FAFSA guide; confirm with the institution how funding is coordinated.
