Hiraizumi’s temples tell a story of gardens, faith and regional power; nearby rivers offer another way to read Iwate’s landscape. Genbikei and Geibikei are often confused because their names sound alike, but they are not two viewpoints on the same excursion. Genbikei is a riverside stretch to explore on foot among rocks, rapids and small waterfalls. Geibikei is a boat journey in which a boatman leads the return trip through a gorge with taller cliffs.
At Genbikei, the main walking route takes about 30 minutes; adding the upper path can bring the visit to around 70 minutes. A basket of kakko dango suspended above the river turns a break into a local tradition, when the service is operating. At Geibikei, the full boat trip takes about 90 minutes, and a stop at the turning point lets passengers walk toward a rock known as the Lion’s Nose. The choice is one of pace: a flexible walk and snack at one gorge, or a guided boat journey and boatman’s song at the other.
Reviews describe a quiet walk, striking rock formations and dango at Genbikei, although some visitors find the stop brief. At Geibikei, comments often praise the limestone walls, still river and boatman’s voice; weather and group size can shape the experience. If travelling with small children or limited mobility, check the trail surface and boat boarding arrangements before choosing. After rain, Genbikei rocks may be slippery, while boat operations can also change with conditions.
From Ichinoseki, Genbikei is about 20 minutes by bus, with the stop close to the entrance; by car it is roughly eight minutes from the expressway. Geibikei is about a five-minute walk from its station on the Ofunato Line, but direct buses from Hiraizumi are seasonal and infrequent. Train travel may require returning via Ichinoseki. If you can visit only one gorge, compare actual outward and return times first: the place that looks closer on a map may take longer because of connections.
