The Future Ready Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship helps residents pursue credentials tied to high-demand occupations. It covers eligible tuition and fees left after other non-repayable grants and scholarships are applied. Loans are not subtracted as though they were grants. Eligibility depends on the course of study and college; living in Iowa or enrolling in any community-college program is not enough.

The program accepts recent high-school, home-school, and equivalency graduates, as well as adults age 20 or older. Applicants must be Iowa residents, enrolled at least part-time, and have a FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI) of $30,000 or less. They must also apply for other available federal and state grants and scholarships. Check the 2026–27 rules and eligible-program list before choosing a credential; the award does not cover every course.

Eligible credentials include specified certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees at participating Iowa community colleges and certain accredited private colleges that provide academic and career services. The program list can change with workforce demand. Iowa says an existing recipient may remain eligible if a program is later removed, provided all other conditions are met; that protection does not necessarily make the removed program available to a new applicant.

The award requires FAFSA and is calculated against the Iowa community-college tuition reference after other non-repayable aid; the exact remaining amount depends on the school, credits, and aid received. The scholarship is limited to the equivalent of eight part-time semesters. To renew, students maintain Iowa residency, attend orientation, register with advising, and participate in academic and career advising when required.

For 2026–27, the Department of Education lists June 30, 2027, as the FAFSA deadline. Iowa advises applying early and checking the eligible-program list before submitting records; a deadline does not extend funding or replace admissions dates. Keep the FAFSA confirmation, request an estimate of college charges, and ask whether the campus receives the application automatically or requires additional steps.

Before relying on the award, compare the credential with the current institutional list, direct costs, and other aid. The scholarship is tied to training for occupations with demand, which may suit students pursuing a specific technical pathway, but it is not a job-placement guarantee. The financial-aid office and academic adviser can confirm whether courses count and whether an enrollment change affects the award.

Before applying, confirm the current cycle, priority date, participating institution, enrollment load, and any missing records. Keep a copy of the FAFSA or state form, transcripts, and submission confirmation. Ask about renewal, covered expenses, and coordination with other aid. Do not budget money until you receive an official award.

Compare net cost and distinguish scholarships, grants, waivers, and loans; they are not all repaid or applied to the same charges. Verify current-cycle dates and requirements directly with the administrator.

Read the program profile and federal FAFSA guide; confirm with the administrator how the aid coordinates.
