A taco lunch in Fresno can carry several different histories. In Chinatown, La Elegante still connects a short Kern Street service to the truck with which the Arenas family began in 1985. Near Fresno State, Tacos Marquitos brings corundas and Morelia-style enchiladas into a breakfast-and-lunch menu. Farther along Blackstone, Don Pepe makes seafood an easy part of the order.
The choice is more useful when it includes the clock. La Elegante closes its restaurant at 2 p.m.; Marquitos follows at 3 p.m. Don Pepe’s Blackstone counter offers a later window. These three kitchens therefore fit different parts of a day rather than forming a route that can simply be postponed until dinner.
La Elegante: the family story behind the adobada
Benito and Celia Arenas began with a taco truck; the restaurant followed in December 1993. Their children continued the business, and Fresno marked its fortieth anniversary in 2025. The blue truck remains in operation, with a recently announced stop on East Muscat Avenue whose hours differ from Kern Street.
At the restaurant, adobada, asada, lengua, cabeza and birria share a generous dressing of guacamole, onion, cilantro, cabbage and chile. Tomato can replace chile. Two-taco combinations add whole beans and rice, while a single-taco combination provides a smaller plate. Direct online ordering is for pickup, an important distinction from the delivery services offered elsewhere in this guide.
Marquitos: look beyond the first taco section
At Barstow and Cedar, handmade tortillas connect breakfast tacos to flour-wrapped burritos and cheese-filled quesadillas. The soft taco uses onion, cabbage and cilantro; a hard-shell version brings lettuce, cheese and tomato. The Super Taco adds boiled beans and a richer set of toppings on two handmade corn tortillas.
Its Michoacán dishes make the detour worthwhile for a mixed table. Corundas come with pork ribs in red sauce; Morelia-style enchiladas, pambazos and fried potato tacos broaden the order. A 7 a.m. opening Tuesday through Sunday also allows egg-and-potato tacos before the ordinary lunch rush. The family restaurant dates its beginning to 2003.
Don Pepe: give seafood a place in the order
Shrimp tacos are the specialty highlighted in local reporting about Don Pepe’s expansion. Fish tacos, asada, chicken and marinated pork provide other choices, with tortas and substantial burritos for diners who want a different format. Blackstone’s published seven-day schedule makes this the later meal among the three selections.
The family business has several Fresno counters and a neighboring Clovis restaurant. Their addresses and individual phone numbers are collected in the profile, including Woodrow near Fresno State. Delivery platforms list the Fresno branches separately, so a delivered order and a pickup order should both be tied to the intended location.
For an early meal, choose between Chinatown tacos and Michoacán antojitos; Blackstone extends the day with seafood and larger plates.
