Florida First Generation Matching Grant: aid if you would be first in your family to earn a degree

FGMG supports Florida residents with financial need whose parents do not hold bachelor’s degrees. It requires FAFSA, at least six credits, and a participating public institution; the college sets its process and amount.

The First Generation Matching Grant (FGMG) serves Florida-resident undergraduates with financial need whose parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree. It is available at participating state universities and Florida College System institutions. “First generation” has an official definition: confirm each parent’s education and the rule for a student supported by only one parent.

Core criteria include state residency, citizenship or eligible immigration status, no prior bachelor’s degree, admission to a participating school, and at least six credits per term as a degree-seeking undergraduate. FAFSA must be processed without errors by the college deadline. Institutions may add procedures, so Florida does not publish one common application date, form, or award amount for all students.

The grant combines state and private matching funds, while each college determines need, final eligibility, and the individual award, capped by cost of attendance. 2026–27 allocations to institutions do not reveal how much one student will receive; the campus award notice is the reference. State fact sheets say summer funding is not currently available.

Apply for admission and contact campus financial aid early for that school’s FGMG form, priority deadline, first-generation definition, and proof requirements. Complete FAFSA and provide residency and parent education documents. Then ask how the grant coordinates with Pell, FSAG, or other scholarships and whether annual renewal is needed; do not assume the award automatically repeats.

To begin, identify the program administrator and the financial-aid office that certifies your enrollment. Review the program profile and requirements; for an individual account, also use the responsible state agency. Before accepting funds, compare the award letter with an itemized campus budget.

Bottom line

If you meet the first-generation definition, request your campus requirements before its deadline: the college controls the process and amount.
