Fenway-Kenmore is one of those Boston neighbourhoods where the sports calendar changes the pace of the streets. When the Red Sox play, Lansdowne Street and Brookline Avenue fill with fans; outside baseball season, the rooms have their own rhythm around football, basketball, hockey and soccer. Visitors can compare several bars on a short walk: Game On, Cask ‘n Flagon and Bleacher Bar sit around the ballpark, each bringing broadcasts into the room in a different way.
Game On occupies two floors at 82 Lansdowne Street. The venue says it opened in 2005 and advertises more than 50 HD screens and a 16-foot projector; its schedule spans NFL, Red Sox baseball, Champions League and NBA playoffs. The lower level is arranged for sports viewing, while Max & Leo’s Artisan Pizza operates upstairs, serving coal-fired pies and wings. Game On also hosts private events with recreational games and access to Fenway’s visitors’ batting cage. It suits groups that want a reserved space instead of relying only on walk-in seating.
Cask ‘n Flagon is at 62 Brookline Avenue, a short walk from the ballpark entrance. Open since 1969, it retains the character of a baseball bar and says HD screens are spread throughout the venue. Its menu and lunch, dinner and late-night cocktail service make it a place for a full meal as well as a stop before first pitch. The venue takes reservations and hosts events of varying sizes. On game days it may open earlier or stay open later, so check its website for that day’s schedule.
Bleacher Bar is distinctive because of its location: it operates beneath Fenway’s center-field bleachers, with a retractable glass garage door facing directly onto the field. It opened in 2008 in a space once used as the visiting team’s batting cage. The current menu brings together ballpark classics, burgers, wings, loaded fries and draft beer; on game days, seating is first come, first served, and the bar opens two hours before first pitch. A game ticket is not required, although age restrictions apply during Red Sox home games and after 10 p.m.
For getting there, the MBTA is the recommended option: Kenmore on the Green Line is nearby, while Lansdowne commuter rail serves event days. The Red Sox themselves warn that parking is limited and traffic rises around the park; parking at an outlying station and continuing by train can save time. All three bars fill before kickoff and for major games, so confirm reservations, age policies and whether the match you want will have sound.
