In Assisi, the view travels in two directions. From the square of Saint Francis it falls towards the plain; from Rocca Maggiore it turns back across the roofs and takes in the whole town. Between those points lie the history of a religious community and that of a fortress built to command the valley. This is a walk that deserves time and energy, more than a string of hurried photographs. The Basilica of Saint Francis and Rocca Maggiore offer different experiences, and it helps to plan them accordingly.
Start at the basilica if you want to make sure you see both churches. The more intimate spaces and tomb are below; frescoes and the bright breadth of the Upper Church are above. Individual entry is free, but the Lower Church, Upper Church and crypt do not share identical hours. Around 4 October 2026, the shrine is also marking eight hundred years since Francis’s death. Check the programme before setting an arrival time, respect areas used for prayer and do not assume a tourist visit is possible during every service.
From the basilica, Via San Francesco leads towards Assisi’s centre. Pause in Piazza del Comune before continuing uphill towards Piazza Matteotti. The Rocca is another roughly 550 metres from there, although that figure says little about the gradient. Much of the visible fortress was rebuilt in the fourteenth century; its rooms and towers explain the military power once trained on the same plain visible from the basilica. For October, the town listed €8 standard admission and opening from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the ticket office closing 45 minutes earlier. Check which towers are open: a partial closure changes the value of the ticket if views are your main aim.
Visitor comments agree on the impact of the frescoes and panorama, while also mentioning groups at the basilica and a demanding climb to the fortress. Use those observations to pace the day, not as a promise that every visit will be the same. Visit Assisi describes the basilica as accessible and the Rocca as inaccessible to people with reduced mobility. If access matters to you, check the precise route between the church levels and consider viewing the fortress from a suitable point in town instead. Driving into the old centre is limited to authorised vehicles.
If you have only a few hours, prioritise the basilica and a walk through the centre; add the Rocca when you have time for the climb and can enter before closing. A civic museum pass may make sense if you will also visit the Roman Forum or art gallery, but the basilica’s free admission is outside that calculation. Assisi rewards a slower reading: two buildings at opposite ends explain the town as a place of pilgrimage, artistic memory and strategic position.

The Basilica of Saint Francis is both a building to study and a place where people still pray. Rocca Maggiore changes your point of view after Assisi’s churches. From Asio hill, streets and roofs appear fitted between the mountain and the plain.
