How can community college students find scholarships to transfer to a four-year university?

Compare the Cooke Foundation transfer award with PTK Connect, including eligibility, deadlines and campus support.

Moving from a community college to a four-year university often raises a new financial question: which credits will transfer, how long the bachelor’s degree will take and which scholarships can be used after transferring. Two national resources help organize the search from different angles. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation offers a highly selective award with funding and advising; Phi Theta Kappa brings together its own scholarships and a search tool for transfer opportunities. Neither replaces a credit evaluation or the financial-aid review at the receiving campus.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s undergraduate transfer scholarship is open for fall 2027 through December 9, 2026. Published requirements include sophomore standing at an accredited community college by January 1, 2027, or graduation since spring 2022; a 3.50 college GPA; demonstrated financial need; and full-time enrollment in a bachelor’s program in fall 2027. Students who have already attended a four-year institution are generally ineligible; the foundation describes limited exceptions that should be confirmed directly. Applications use Common App for Transfer, do not require a nomination and may provide up to $55,000 a year for the final two or three years after institutional aid. The foundation says it selects about 65 students a year from thousands of applications.

Phi Theta Kappa broadens the map. Its competitive application has a December 1, 2026 deadline for awards including Hites Transfer, Christopher Calhoun Transfer and New Century Transfer & Workforce Pathway. PTK Connect adds more than 3,000 scholarships from colleges, states, national programs and member-only awards, with filters by campus, major and eligibility. The general application may remain open year-round, but each program has its own review period. Partner-university scholarships are not applied for through PTK; students apply to the college and follow its calendar.

A practical route is to ask your community college transfer adviser for an early credit review, identify the receiving university and entry term, and use PTK Connect to compare matching awards. Then prepare transcripts, a course list, recommendations and FAFSA information before applying. Ask the receiving campus’s financial-aid office whether a scholarship combines with other aid or changes when credits transfer. Also verify whether PTK membership is required or merely preferred; rules vary. The linked pages reflect application information checked on October 12, 2026. Confirm each program before sending documents or paying a membership fee.

Bottom line

Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
