Maskay guide

How can you combine Tenryu-ji and Iwatayama Monkey Park in Arashiyama?

A route between Tenryu-ji’s Zen garden and Iwatayama’s macaques, with elevation, opening times and accessibility to consider.

Arashiyama looks compact on a map, but two of its best-known visits require different paces. Tenryu-ji unfolds among temple buildings and Sogenchi’s pond garden; Iwatayama Monkey Park begins with a climb up the hillside on the far side of the river. Visiting both in one day is possible if the plan does not treat them as a single flat stroll and leaves enough time for the uphill path.

Tenryu-ji opens its garden at 8:30 am and closes at 5:00 pm, with last admission at 4:50 pm. The garden may take about an hour, longer if you add the interior buildings or Hatto Hall, which have separate admission and opening dates. From the temple, walk toward Togetsukyo Bridge and cross to the south side of the Katsura; the park climb starts there. Reversing the order is possible, but visiting the temple first reduces pressure to reach the summit before closing.

Iwatayama calls for grippy shoes and moderate effort: the slope and rain can slow the trail. Kyoto’s tourism federation lists hours of 9:00 am–4:00 pm, summit closure at 4:30 pm and possible irregular closures. Since the operator’s website is unavailable, check operations on the day. The route is not wheelchair accessible. Japanese macaques roam freely at the top; following instructions and not approaching or feeding them outside the permitted point is essential.

Randen Arashiyama Station is about five minutes from Tenryu-ji; JR Saga-Arashiyama about 13, and Hankyu Arashiyama about 15. For the park, the bridge crossing and hillside entrance shape the route. During blossom or foliage seasons, crowds increase along paths and around the bridge, so start early and leave room for queues. Water, sun protection and a pause between sites make the day easier.

Tenryu-ji offers historical heritage and a garden that frames the mountains; Iwatayama adds a city panorama and responsible wildlife viewing. These profiles explain what each stop offers and what conditions to consider before setting out: Tenryu-ji and Iwatayama Monkey Park.

Bottom line

Visit Tenryu-ji first and leave time and energy for Iwatayama’s climb. If weather, mobility or opening times are not favourable, splitting the visits is a sensible choice.
