City of Commerce, California Scholarship: 2027 application, requirements, and documents

Commerce plans to release its 2027 scholarship application in early January. This guide explains what the 2026 edition required—residency, grades, financial need, a sealed transcript, and an interview—and why applicants must confirm the new cycle’s rules when its form appears.

The City of Commerce Scholarship is municipal aid for Commerce, California residents who are pursuing or planning college, university, or graduate study. The City says the 2027 application will be available in early January 2027. As of October 12, 2026, the new cycle’s application is not posted, so the 2026 rules can help applicants prepare but are not yet confirmed terms for 2027.

In 2025, the City reported awarding scholarships of $400 to $3,000 to 54 residents. Those are historical results for one cycle; they do not mean every applicant receives an award or that the range will remain the same in 2027. The City’s current page does not set the next cohort’s award amount. The 2026 application describes a college-focused award with school-related verification and disbursement.

The 2026 edition required at least one year of Commerce residency and a City resident card together with California identification; high-school students without state ID could use a current school ID. It served students pursuing associate, bachelor’s, or postgraduate degrees. Undergraduate college students had to carry at least 12 units, while graduate students did not have to be full-time. The 2027 call may change any of these rules, so recheck them when the new application is released.

Academic thresholds in the 2026 materials varied by school type: a 2.0 overall GPA for community college, 2.5 for a four-year university, and 3.0 for graduate study. Applicants had to show financial need and acceptance for the next term. The previous file included a checklist, financial analysis sheet, autobiographical essay, two recommendation forms in English, proof of acceptance, a sealed official transcript, identification, and a W-9. Missing items could disqualify an application.

The transcript had to remain sealed; the READs Center warned that opening the envelope could make it no longer official. Recommendation letters had to be current, and the City advised students to request them early. A letter could also be required for applicants with more than 24 volunteer hours. In the prior cycle, finalists had to be available for in-person interviews on two listed dates, even though each person attended only the date assigned to them.

The 2026 deadline has passed, so applicants should not submit that form as if it were an active opportunity. For 2027, wait for the new deadline, eligibility criteria, document checklist, and interview dates. The previous cycle is useful for planning a file, not a promise that requirements will be repeated. Also ask how receipt is confirmed; in the last cycle, staff issued a signed and dated confirmation.

The official application will be linked from the City scholarship page and may be submitted by email to CommerceScholarship@commerceca.gov or mailed to Commerce READs Center, 5655 Jillson Street, Commerce, CA 90040, subject to the 2027 instructions. The center’s phone number is 323-887-4423. The Commerce scholarship profile explains the cycle status; the READs Center profile provides the official contact and submission location.

Before sending tax or personal details, use only the form linked from the City’s official Commerce pages and confirm updated requirements there. The scholarship may add local help for residents, but it does not replace FAFSA, California state aid, or college-based assistance. If an admissions or deposit deadline is approaching, do not wait for the municipal application before pursuing other available aid.

Bottom line

The 2026 cycle is closed; Commerce says the 2027 application will appear in early January. Use prior requirements only as a preparation checklist and wait for the new form before collecting or sending sensitive documents.
