The Churchill Scholarship connects participating U.S. colleges with one year of master’s study at Churchill College, Cambridge. It is aimed at U.S. citizens with outstanding academic records and evidence of research ability in science, mathematics, or engineering. Students cannot apply as independent candidates: they first contact their university’s fellowship office, which selects nominees and sets an internal deadline.
The national 2027 nomination deadline is listed as November 2, 2026, at 5 p.m. Eastern Time; each campus may require materials weeks earlier. The Foundation advises applying to Cambridge early because admissions are rolling. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree before the award begins and meet the Foundation’s graduation-year or recent-alumnus criteria.
The award covers tuition, round-trip travel to the United Kingdom, visa costs and the health surcharge, plus a stipend set above the U.K. Research Council standard. Scholars may apply for an additional $4,000 research grant. The Foundation lists up to 16 Churchill STEM awards and up to two Kanders science-policy awards; Kanders funding is conditional and follows a different application route.
Selection weighs STEM coursework, research or original projects, references, and personal qualities; the Foundation publishes no minimum GPA, although most applicants have very strong records. This is an intensive one-year award, not a general college scholarship for any major. Confirm that your home institution is on the current list, coordinate nomination and U.K. admission, and check how the award handles expenses it does not cover.
Before submitting, confirm whether the deadline is national, state, school, or campus-based, who must send each document, and the time zone. Keep receipts and check application status. Ask the financial-aid office how the award combines with FAFSA, other scholarships, and the full cost of attendance.
Read the aid-program profile and the FAFSA guide; confirm how funding is coordinated.
