SSCG is supplemental aid for California Community College students receiving Cal Grant B or C who attend full time. It does not replace Cal Grant or the California College Promise Grant: it adds support under separate rules to offset other costs and encourage timely credit completion. The campus financial-aid office administers the process and determines whether funds are available.
Current institutional guidance describes two tiers: students taking 12 to 14.99 units may receive up to $2,596 per year, while students taking 15 or more units may receive up to $8,000 per year. Payments are divided by term and depend on eligibility and funding. “Up to” is not a guaranteed award, and the campus may need to verify Cal Grant and enrollment first.
FAFSA or CADAA allows the system to evaluate related aid; applicants must receive Cal Grant B or C and meet unit, academic-progress, and cycle-specific requirements. Credits are checked at census dates, and a reduced load may change or cancel the award. Ask whether your college requests extra documents and how late-start courses are treated.
If you plan 15 units, compare books, transportation, and living costs with your full aid package, but do not budget the maximum before seeing your official award. Ask financial aid to confirm your tier, certified units, expected payment date, and effect of dropping a course. The Chancellor’s Office page hosts statewide guidance; the campus explains local documents and deadlines for 2026–27.
SSCG supplements Cal Grant B or C at participating community colleges; it is not a stand-alone award for every California student. Eligible units affect the amount, and the college verifies enrollment during the term. Before taking 15 credits to seek the higher tier, make sure the load is manageable and each course applies to your education plan.
Published caps distinguish 12–14.99 units from 15 or more, but the grant does not guarantee every student the maximum. Cal Grant eligibility, enrollment, campus rules, and funding all matter. Ask the college for an estimate and find out whether a unit change could reduce or require repayment of part of the award.
File FAFSA or CADAA as applicable and respond promptly to verification requests. Ask financial aid to confirm your Cal Grant B or C, SSCG status, and census dates. Compare tuition and fees with transportation, books, and food; this grant supports completion but does not replace a full cost-of-attendance budget.
Before deciding, request an individual estimate showing aid applied first, remaining tuition, required fees, and outside costs. Confirm residency, credits, renewal, deadlines, and documents against current official guidance, and keep submission receipts.
Read the official program profile and the FAFSA application guide; ask the college for an individual balance review.

Checked October 13, 2026 against official sources. Eligibility, award amounts, funding, and deadlines vary by program and can change by cycle. A grant does not necessarily cover housing, meals, books, or transportation. File FAFSA or the applicable state application, confirm your balance with the financial-aid office, and do not pay third parties to apply.
Compare net cost and excluded charges before committing; the financial-aid office confirms eligibility and the final balance.
