Golden State Teacher Grant: up to $20,000 and the service contract to understand

California offers up to $20,000 to students in eligible teacher-preparation programs; amount, cohort, and service years depend on the individual agreement.

California’s Golden State Teacher Grant (GSTG) aims to increase teachers and pupil-services staff in priority schools. CSAC operates a separate application and advertises a maximum of $20,000; it is not open to every college major and FAFSA alone does not secure an award. Terms depend on the applicant’s cohort and annual budget can limit new awards.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Commission on Teacher Credentialing-approved professional preparation program at a California institution and file FAFSA or CADAA. CSAC assigns rules by application cohort and Student Aid Index; the portal and agreement identify the applicable terms. Berkeley notes that new 2026–27 awards depend on the state budget and may close when funding is exhausted.

The $20,000 cap does not describe every cohort or the same service term: an agreement may require two years within four after program completion or four within eight, depending on the cohort and award. Students must complete preparation and obtain the credential within six years of the initial payment. Noncompliance can turn part or all of the grant into repayable debt.

File FAFSA or CADAA, register in the CSAC portal, complete the GSTG application, and coordinate with your program’s graduate student affairs and financial-aid offices. If offered an award, read and return the Service Agreement within its stated deadline—Berkeley says 30 days—before accepting. Confirm that your intended employer appears on the state’s eligible priority-school or preschool list.

The grant may become repayable if service is not completed: verify your cohort and sign only after mapping your credential and employment route. Read the program profile and the administering office; ask your campus financial-aid office to review your individual file.

Bottom line

The grant may become repayable if service is not completed: verify your cohort and sign only after mapping your credential and employment route.
