Cal-HBCU is specialized state aid for students transferring from a California Community College to a participating Historically Black College or University. It helps reduce the financial burden of changing schools and often moving out of state. It is not an award for every HBCU; students must confirm participating campuses, agreements, and funding with CSAC and their transfer center.

CSAC describes an award of up to $5,000. “Up to” matters: an individual award depends on eligibility, funding, enrollment, and approved expenses. It is not an admissions guarantee or the same as an articulation agreement that transfers credits; students must separately confirm academic requirements, deadlines, and admission at the receiving school.

Start with the community college transfer and financial-aid offices. Ask whether your HBCU is participating, what credit and transfer status are required, whether the application is open, and what CSAC documents are needed. Keep FAFSA or CADAA current when applicable and request a net-cost estimate after other scholarships.

Transfer agreements may ease admission or credit recognition, but funding is separate: compare nonresident tuition, housing, travel, insurance, books, and relocation expenses. If you change destinations or defer a term, confirm how that affects the grant before accepting. CSAC lists it among specialized opportunities, while the receiving college controls billing and disbursement timing.

First verify that the chosen HBCU participates in the current award cycle and that the transfer program is open. The list may depend on agreements and funding cycles; admission, credit transfer, and a Cal-HBCU award are related but separate decisions. A transfer adviser can review equivalencies before you pay a deposit.

“Up to $5,000” is a ceiling, not a guaranteed award or relocation reimbursement. Ask which charges are eligible, how other scholarships are counted, and whether the grant can renew beyond one year. Budget for travel, housing, insurance, and any nonresident tuition difference even if the grant is approved.

Request guidance from your community college transfer center and confirm the current process with CSAC. Bring transcripts, a course plan, FAFSA/CADAA, and admission letters. If the destination changes after an award, tell both offices promptly; aid may depend on a participating campus and may not follow the student without official updates.

Before deciding, request an individual estimate showing aid applied first, remaining tuition, required fees, and outside costs. Confirm residency, credits, renewal, deadlines, and documents against current official guidance, and keep submission receipts.

Read the official program profile and the FAFSA application guide; ask the college for an individual balance review.

Checked October 13, 2026 against official sources. Eligibility, award amounts, funding, and deadlines vary by program and can change by cycle. A grant does not necessarily cover housing, meals, books, or transportation. File FAFSA or the applicable state application, confirm your balance with the financial-aid office, and do not pay third parties to apply.

Bottom line

Compare net cost and excluded charges before committing; the financial-aid office confirms eligibility and the final balance.
