The Cal Grant Foster Youth Access Award is an additional benefit for young people who experienced foster care and qualify for Cal Grant in California. The commission lists up to $6,000 in additional aid per year, but it is not a stand-alone scholarship that replaces Cal Grant requirements or guarantees a fixed amount. The state page says no separate application is needed for consideration; eligibility depends on meeting foster-youth criteria and receiving a qualifying Cal Grant award.
CSAC groups several supports that are easy to confuse: Chafee Grant has its own application; Middle Class Scholarship for Foster Youth applies to specified UC, CSU, or community-college bachelor’s programs; and the Access Award is added to Cal Grant when the state can identify eligibility. Verify foster-care status, dates, and how to report them in FAFSA or the college file, and contact a foster-youth financial-aid specialist if the system does not reflect your history.
After filing FAFSA or the applicable state alternative application, create or check your WebGrants 4 Students account and review the Cal Grant award. Ask your college whether the supplement appears separately, which expenses it may cover, and when it is credited. Do not share sensitive case details through unsecured messages. If you receive Cal Grant but do not see the Access Award, ask CSAC or the college aid office to check for missing documentation or a data match; do not submit duplicate applications unless directed.
Before accepting aid, compare the net balance with tuition, fees, and other costs; confirm requirements and deadlines with the official source and ask the college financial-aid office for guidance.
Read the official program profile and FAFSA guide; request an individual review before enrolling.
