Cal Grant in California: award types, eligibility, and how to apply

Cal Grant includes several state awards for college and career training; the award type, income limits, and dates depend on your pathway and school.

Cal Grant is not one scholarship with a single award amount: it is a family of California state grants administered by the California Student Aid Commission. Cal Grant A, B, and C serve different academic paths and education costs, so first identify which award may fit your record and institution.

Eligibility may depend on California residency, financial need, family income and assets, a certified GPA, academic level, and enrollment at a participating school. Cal Grant A generally supports tuition in degree programs; Cal Grant B combines access funding with possible tuition support in later years; Cal Grant C is aimed at approved career, technical, and occupational training. Not every award applies at every institution.

Income and asset ceilings and award amounts are published by academic year and vary by award type and school sector. The official 2026–27 comparison chart says offers remain subject to approval of the final state budget. The college coordinates the grant with other aid and explains the amount that can actually be credited; a published ceiling is not a promise of payment.

For 2026–27, the ordinary priority filing date was March 2, 2026; some community-college applicants could file by September 2. As of October 13, 2026, both dates have passed for that cycle, although verification may continue. For the next cycle, file the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application, make sure your school submits your GPA, and check WebGrants 4 Students and current CSAC instructions.

The agency or institution determines final eligibility and the award under current-cycle rules and available funding. Read the program profile and the administering agency; ask the college for an individual review.

Before accepting an offer, compare the award shown in WebGrants with the school’s cost of attendance and ask whether the award is provisional, verified, or already posted to your student account. If you changed schools, began a different program, or have a GPA correction pending, tell both CSAC and the campus; Cal Grant eligibility can depend on the school and program reported for that year. Keep copies of the GPA submission and any verification notices.
