BIE Higher Education Grant: supplemental aid for eligible Tribal students

Students apply through their Tribe’s education office; eligibility depends on ancestry or membership, admission, and need—not automatic BIE payment.

The BIE Higher Education Grant Program offers supplemental assistance to certain American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree. A key detail for families is where to apply: students start with their Tribe’s education officer, while the college determines need and builds the aid package. The grant is not an automatic entitlement and does not replace FAFSA.

BIE’s official information packet requires membership in a Tribe eligible for federal Indian programs or the specified degree of Indian blood descent, admission to a nationally accredited institution offering an associate or bachelor’s degree, and financial need determined by the college aid officer. Tribal rules, priorities, deadlines, and local funding may add conditions. Confirm with both Tribe and school because BIE does not directly award every student grant.

The grant is supplemental and depends on appropriations, Tribal budgets, and unmet need; no single amount applies to everyone. The college aid office may need to verify cost of attendance and other scholarships. File FAFSA and other federal/state applications in parallel so the package can identify remaining need.

Find the education officer for the Tribe in which you are enrolled or from which you descend, request its form and deadline, and gather membership/ancestry documents. At the same time, apply for admission and FAFSA, and ask the college to verify need and cost. Do not rely on a date from an old brochure; the Tribe confirms the timeline for its annual allocation.

The published information packet is general and does not set a universal yearly amount. Your Tribe sets process, dates, and cycle priorities. Read the program profile and the administering agency; ask your financial-aid office to review your individual case.
