Arkansas has two programs with Challenge in the name, but one supports higher education and the other an approved high-demand workforce credential. Academic Challenge can serve recent graduates, current college students and returning students; Workforce Challenge supports approved occupational programs and excludes anyone simultaneously receiving Academic Challenge. Choose based on the program and credential, not just the fund’s name.
Academic Challenge requires Arkansas residency for at least 12 months before enrollment, FAFSA and acceptance at an approved institution. It is not a need-based scholarship: income does not determine basic eligibility, although FAFSA’s SAI can open the Challenge PLUS supplement. The traditional route recognizes a Diploma of Merit; a GPA below 3.0 combined with an eligible test score; or a GPA of 3.0 or higher with a standardized test score on record. A separate nontraditional route applies to current and returning college students and uses different credit and GPA rules. ADHE lists July 1 as the annual deadline; check SAMS and the campus aid office for the application window for your academic year and upload complete records.
The official schedule beginning in 2025–26 is tiered: $2,000 in year one at two- or four-year schools; in year two, $3,000 at a two-year college or $4,000 at a four-year school; $4,000 in year three at a four-year school; and $5,000 in year four. Challenge PLUS may add an amount based on SAI: students below 8,000 can qualify for the supplemental scale; tiers and caps vary by year in college and institution type, up to the published $2,500-per-semester maximum in certain categories. These amounts are not automatic for everyone who qualifies, and the page says combined aid may be reduced under the cost-of-attendance limit. Renewal depends on progress and credits, not simply filing FAFSA again.
Workforce Challenge is a shorter route for healthcare, construction trades, advanced manufacturing, information technology, and logistics, distribution and transportation. ADHE requires six months of residency, a diploma or equivalency, acceptance into an approved program and an application at least 30 days before starting. The maximum is $1,500 for certain 80–179-hour programs and $3,000 for options of 180 hours or more or at least six credits; it cannot exceed standard tuition and fees. The award is not automatically renewable, although students who finish may reapply for another eligible program. Academic and Workforce Challenge cannot be received at the same time: confirm which one applies before committing to enrollment or paying a nonrefundable deposit.
SAMS may not show an update at the same speed for every file. In September 2026, a student asked a public forum why the previous year still appeared; that post captures one user’s uncertainty, not proof of a statewide delay. If your file does not change, save a dated screenshot, confirm FAFSA arrived and the category is correct, and ask ADHE in writing what remains outstanding. ADHE lists 501-371-2000 and finaid@adhe.edu; the college can confirm its approved status, total charges and certified award. Also budget for books, supplies, housing, food and transport, none of which the scholarship guarantees.
Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
