Three market mornings in Alexandria, from King Street to Del Ray
Alexandria is often approached as one compact historic destination, but its farmers markets make more sense as neighborhood appointments. Old Town’s brick streets and waterfront draw a weekend crowd; Del Ray’s Mount Vernon Avenue works as a local main street; Old Town North sits a few blocks north of King Street in a growing arts and cultural district. The markets are not interchangeable: one has the scale and history of a civic square, another is a producer-focused Saturday habit, and the third pairs shopping with neighborhood gathering.
Old Town Farmers’ Market is currently operating in the 100 block of North Royal Street and the courtyard at Tavern Square while City Hall and Market Square undergo renovation. The city says the temporary arrangement will last through the project, described as a two-to-three-year renovation. Saturdays remain 7 a.m. to noon, year-round. At peak season, the market lists more than 70 vendors, with fruits and vegetables, meats, poultry, cheeses, breads, pastries, fresh pasta, pickles, flowers, plants, soap, jewelry and art. The city identifies it as a market continuously held at the same site for more than 260 years, although shoppers should use the current Royal Street entrance rather than assume the old plaza layout.
Old Town is also the easiest of these three to combine with a transit-and-walking day. The King Street Trolley runs between the King Street–Old Town Metro station and City Hall/Market Square, and the city lists DASH buses 30, 31 and 34 for the market. During Saturday market hours, the city specifies free parking in the Tavern Square garage at 418 Cameron Street and Courthouse Square garage at 111 South Pitt Street; their end times differ, so check the city’s notice if you plan a longer stop. More than 30 vendors accept SNAP, and Alexandria’s Double Dollars program matches SNAP benefits up to $20 at the market. The city asks visitors not to bring pets inside the market boundaries.
Del Ray Farmers Market meets at the corner of East Oxford and Mount Vernon avenues on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, year-round. The organizer describes a peak-season roster of more than 20 farmers and vendors. The city and market list a distinctly food-led range: in-season fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, bread, fresh pasta, baked goods and cut flowers. Recent organizer updates show the market functioning as a social stop as well as a shopping run, with volunteer activities and occasional live music; the weekly mix follows the season. Del Ray’s Mount Vernon Avenue is promoted as a walkable neighborhood main street, so this visit feels more like joining a local morning routine than entering a large municipal square.
Old Town North Farmers Market is based at Montgomery Park, 901 North Royal Street. Alexandria’s market listing gives a year-round Sunday session from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., plus Thursday hours of 3 to 7 p.m. in spring, summer and fall. The offer includes fresh produce, baked goods, gift items, easy take-home meals, guest artisans and pop-up vendors. The city says the market participates in SNAP Double Dollars for produce and accepts donations of nonperishable food for local food pantries and animal welfare. The partnership’s current page also lists a Sunday compost drop-off and free outdoor yoga; check the organizer’s calendar for that week’s details rather than assuming every activity runs each Sunday.
The practical difference is distance. Old Town’s market sits within the historic street grid and trolley corridor. Del Ray is a separate neighborhood stop on the Mount Vernon Avenue side of the city, while Montgomery Park is north of the King Street mile. Alexandria’s fare-free DASH network serves neighborhoods beyond Old Town, but a short trolley ride will not carry a shopper to all three. Check the DASH map and service alerts, then use each profile’s address for the final leg. For driving, the city publishes the two specific free Saturday garages for Old Town; it does not describe a shared parking arrangement for all three markets. Plan each visit on its own terms, bring bags for a produce-and-bakery haul, and check vendor lists before making a special trip.
For a single stop, choose the market that fits the day and neighborhood: Old Town is the broadest historic Saturday market, Del Ray is the year-round neighborhood regular, and Old Town North adds a Sunday gathering with food-access and community programs.
